Translation
A high-quality translation helps launch a text toward new horizons and a larger audience. Throughout this fascinating and meticulous process, we pay special attention to the fundamental task of preserving a writer’s distinctive voice. We have a deep understanding of the nuances particular to each language, essential to avoid forced and literal translations. We also possess extensive knowledge of what in the United States is considered “standard Spanish,” used mainly in nonfiction material to cross all cultural barriers and provide an unobstructed message to the greatest possible number of Spanish-language speakers.
Every text deserves reaching a growing readership without sacrificing its authenticity. Our translation services build the bridge to carry that unique voice to new and countless readers.

ABOUT
Hercilia Mendizabal Frers was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where English was a mainstay in her education from start to finish, providing her with a complete bilingual upbringing that would eventually lead to new opportunities abroad. She moved to the United States, obtained a B.A. in Political Theory from Georgetown University and a M.A. in Spanish Literature from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. She has since worked in both academic and editorial settings. She became Assistant Editor at HarperCollins Publishers, a stepping-stone that gave way to freelancing for publishing houses such as Simon & Schuster, Penguin Random House, and HarperCollins Publishers, as well as developing and editing language-acquisition content for companies such as Berlitz and Vista Higher Learning.
She translates fiction and nonfiction, as well as children's and young adult literature. Working as a freelancer has allowed her to live all over the U.S. and, more important, to travel frequently to her adored South America. She has been living in the United States for the past two decades.
TESTIMONIALS
“I had the good fortune to be introduced to Hercilia when I needed a Spanish translator to help with a very important rush job. I needed the best, and I also needed someone who could work quickly. Hercilia was both! She stepped in to manage translation and project management, and she quickly got up to speed on all of our internal systems and processes. I was then grateful when two more chances to work with Hercilia came up—one involving Spanish translation of one of our most successful and best-loved books, and one involving editing and project management of a complex multi-book English-language project. Hercilia has managed both with excellence. She is so very good at what she does, and also so very kind and easygoing. With demand for Spanish-language books increasing in the publishing marketplace, you'd be smart to book Hercilia now!”
Joy Peskin
Executive Editorial Director at Farrar Straus Giroux Books for Young Readers, Divisional VP for MCPG
“Hercilia has been an excellent copyeditor and proofreader for our Spanish titles. Her work is carefully reviewed and always delivered on time. She is efficient yet thorough, often working on our translations that need specialized editing. Highly recommend!”
Terri Leoanard
Executive Managing Editor, HarperCollins Publishers
"We have worked with Hercilia on Spanish-language editions of our children's books for several years now, and found her knowledgeable, thoughtful, prompt, and always cheerful and good-natured. In addition to proofreading, copy editing, and translating various projects, she has helped us learn more about the market for Spanish language children's books and shape best practices for the future. We are grateful for her guidance."
Kathy Landwehr
Vice President and Associate Publisher, Peachtree Publishers
"I keep coming back to Hercilia to save the day! As an experienced copyeditor, proofreader, and translator, I can count on Hercilia with any range of titles; from historical novels, thrillers and humor, to dense nonfiction and memoirs. She has helped shape up both original Spanish-language books and translations, offering conscientious and knowledgeable suggestions for improvements on some of our most complicated projects. Hercilia’s edits are clear, professional, thorough and always on time. She’s a pleasure to work with. I would recommend to anyone looking for a talented editor and translator!"
Emily Strode
Production Editor, HarperCollins Publishers
“I hired Hercilia to take on editorial management of a Spanish language instructional project [for Berlitz] that had undergone some unexpected shifts and required new oversight. Things were not necessarily in the best shape when she took the project on. Right from the start Hercilia was professional and knowledgeable and put my mind at ease that I had made the right decision in hiring her. She quickly put affairs in order on this first project, and has always responded with patience and diligence in the face of unforeseen complications, glitches, and all of the other less enjoyable aspects of content development.
I was so happy with Hercilia that I hired her for a second project even before the first project was done. I am happy for her that this one has run much more smoothly, yet it is a testament to her steadiness and professionalism that I would never be able to tell that one project was straightforward, and the other one far less so, based on her demeanor.
Hercilia is a pleasure to work with, and a true professional: knowledgeable, dependable, and practical. I look forward to working with her on as many projects as I can, and while it pains me to share such talent with potential competitors, I am happy to recommend her without reservation.”
